Deity is a new club on Atlantic ave at bond street. It’s swanky yet more down to earth then what you would expect clientele like good djs and dressing up. Thursdays and Sundays are my favorite nights.

It also used to be a synagogue and there is a Star of David cieling and a tree in the middle of the dancefloor. Excerpt taken from their site:
“I want the gates to look like the entrance to the crypt of a goddess…” –Caio Dunson
It was from these words of Caio that I took my initial direction and inspiration for the Deity front gates. I wanted to create a look that bridged the ancient and the modern. Their weathered and worn appearance helps to span this gap. Because the main stairs descend directly from behind the gates, I wanted to emphasize the distinct difference between the surface’ realities that we live with, and those that lie beyond. The tree motif symbolizes a life lived and all that it’s ‘branches’ have touched. The tree’s roots descend downwards toward the earth, tying the living to the genealogy of the dead. What is left on the surface represents the life before: the three orbs are embodiments of the sun, the earth, and the moon. The skyward stretch of the tree’s limbs signifies the struggle of life in general. What lies below is an escape, a reprieve– a chance to go beyond the banality of the everyday.

Best band from Brooklyn. “Dear Science” instant classic! I saw them last summer at Celebrate Brooklyn and totally fell in love.

Every year in Crown Heights during Labor day weekend starting at 3am, Carribean people gather for the largest parade of its kind in the world. They create massive mobile sound systems, cook up mass amounts of tasty jerk chicken, “doubles” (pockets of curried meat and veggies), salted fish, ginger beer and much more. You will gorge yourself while being energized by the winding of hips and colorful costumes. The number of cops keeps getting more disturbing every year, but its still a true Brooklyn experience.

Keistar productions put on theme and tribute parties and feature DJ Spinna or Bobitto flexing their veteran skills. The most recent was at the Sugar Factory, a massive club on Kent in Williamsburg, that accept for the lack of ventilation in the upstairs main floor warehouse area, is definitely one of the best spots for large scale events in Brooklyn.
The latest party was Michael Jackson vs Prince and Spinna definitely had his mixes worked out. He pulled some crazy blends and had almost a thousand people getting their serious groove on! Definitely check out Keistar on myspace for the latest event info.

A scrumptious French bistro with a flair for tasty inexpensive wines. Cosy warm decor and a chill garden area sets it apart from the slew of bistros popping up in Brooklyn. Try the hanger steak or 1/2 Poulet, and the creme brulee or molten chocolate cake for desert. A broad wine selection and an emphasis on bar food like tartines, terrines, and cheeses.

Red Hook might be feel like another world to the average Brooklynite. Its quiet and hard to get to by car or bus, but fairly easy by bike. You just have to know where you are going or have a GPS. Making a trek out to the Red Hook Ballfields for some serious Latin cuisine is a great way to spend a Saturday or Sunday. Line up for burritos/tacos and other fried food that you probably have never seen or had before. The cuisine is from Ecuador, Guatamala and other central Latin American countries. Its super cheap and very authentic. Head over the the largest public pool in Brooklyn (across the street) after you let your food digest.
How to get there
By subway: F, G to Smith/9th St. Walk two blocks west on 9th St to Clinton St; turn left and continue north six blocks to Bay St. By bus: B77 to Red Hook.
Red Hook Recreational Center and Pool, 155 Bay Street, Phone: (718) 722-3211
Note: On Saturday, September 18th, the food vendors will be celebrating Mexican and Central American Independence with live bands, a DJ, clowns, etc.
